Over the past decade, the Baati/Shiid has become a global pop-cultural phenomenon, deeply rooted in the Somali region. Ancient cities such as Zeila, Mogadishu, and Berbera have long been recognized as historical hubs of the textile industry, serving as cultural anchors for Somali cultural traditions and rich material culture.
Baati as Archive offers a sneak peek into the world of the Baati/Shiid and the Diiraac, from the vibrant everyday dress to glitter, satin-like evening wear that is glamorous and one-size-fits-all. Often worn with a garbasaar symbolizing personhood, style, and womanhood in Somali culture, the intricate decora-tions, patterns, and silhouettes all hold meaning that is often gifted from one generation to another.
